Barkcloth
If you anything like I was the first time I heard of barkcloth you may be sitting there scratching your head and thinking to yourself "just what is barkcloth?" If that sounds familiar don't worry - you're not alone. That's why I decided to write a quick article outlining just what barkcloth is. So without further delay, let's get started.Originally the word barkcloth referred to a type of fabric common in Asia, Africa and the Pacific that was made from the inner bark of trees. Essentially, to make the fabric parts of the inner bark of the trees were taken and beaten flat to form sheets of fabric. These sheets of fabric were then used in a variety of different ways.
Over time the term barkcloth took on new meaning and began to be used in reference to a particular weave in fabrics. The barkcloth weave is a heavy weave that is dense and nubby. It gets it's name because the weave of the fabric is rough and looks a little bit like the bark of a tree.
Barkcloth fabrics were popular in home decorating in the 1950's and 60's and are regaining popularity again today. The most valued barkcloth prints seem to be atomic prints from the Eames Era along with floral prints with a cottage feel to them.
While many barkcloths are still being used in home decor, crafters have found other uses for the vintage barkcloth fabrics as well using them to create new and beautiful pieces including pillow covers, handbags, totes, and quilts.
